Reproduction / Fertility

We will help you with any equine reproduction topic that could arise from your daily farm management such as: artificial insemination (A.I.); the use of cooled or frozen semen; stallion handling; managing the mare for breeding and foaling.

  • Breeding Soundness Exam: Prior to the beginning of the breeding season a breeding soundness examination should be performed in all stallions and broodmares. For stallions the exam should include semen concentration, sperm motility, morphology and cultures in addition to test cool. The size and consistency of the testicles are measured and the results recorded. An EVA test is also performed in all stallions intended for breeding. For mares a complete reproductive exam is performed to determine their reproductive soundness. This includes rectal palpation and ultrasound examination of the reproductive system as a whole. We will determine if there are any uterine cysts or other causes of subfertility. Additional diagnostic exams can include uterine biopsy, uterine cytology smear and culture.

  • Artificial Insemination: Mares can be artificially inseminated with fresh, cooled or frozen semen. Breeding fertile mares with cooled or frozen semen of fertile stallions can be simple and efficient and result in pregnancy rates similar to those of fresh semen.
